What is a pregnancy massage?

A pregnancy massage is a full body massage especially designed with Pregnancy in mind, aiming to offer support and relaxation according to each trimester.

Like all massages it helps physically, emotionally and mentally, however it is done in awareness of process the mother is going through: from helping address the potential symptoms of each stage, to overall promoting relaxation, integration and a reset.

I have chosen to study indepth pregnancy massage to have the confidence to massage safely during pregnancy, including in the first trimester, and regardless of any minor complications.
After the first trimester, essential oils can be introduced safely to further enhance the treatment with Aromatherapy.

This type of massage is beneficial whether you like deep pressure or not. I will tend to work as deep as it is comfortable and necessary, combining with more gentle strokes. Pressure can also be adjusted, as comfort is a must and some days we may feel more sensitive than others.

What happens in a pregnancy massage?

  1. We start with a detail consultation, where you will be asked  about your medical history as well as about your pregnancy and expectations from the massage.

  2. We agree on the massage and oils to use, I leave you to undress accordingly and prepare the oil blend.

  3. Depending on the stage of pregnancy and  how we choose to work, we might start on a couch, or on a ball or chair, or on a floor Mat. In advanced stages of pregnancy I prefer to work on the floor mat. After the first trimester the massage will be include sidelying.

  4. Typically You will receive a massage of Back, lower back/ hips, legs, arms, neck, chest, shoulder and face. It will include some mobilisations and if needed, some lymphatic drainage. Your bump will be massaged at your discretion however I like keeping some acknowledgement of the little person growing there.

  5. We might use some breathing and visualisation, however If you strongly wish for this let me know.

  6. I might look at the posture, as well as suggest  pregnancy related things that might help

How long does a pregnancy massage last?

Typically it lasts 90 minutes, this is including the consultation/check in time

To grow new humans, over 9 months, gradually, the body’s whole centre of gravity shifts, the blood supply becomes shared, tissues start to expand, hormones change, the body prepares for birth, for lactation, for parenting! This is such a huge shift that is felt in more ways than physical. In the mean time, inside the womb a new little being is forming, growing different body parts, developing senses, feelings, thoughts…and the bond between mother and child begins.

However the world carries on. Jobs, chores, studies, relationships, world news; maternity leave doesn’t come in place until the last few weeks. So it’s the perfect time to be receiving as much support and nourishment as possible. Massage can play a beautiful part in this process, and an aromatherapy massage can aid various ailments of the time as well as just add the extra luxury element to the treatment.
